Irvine, Calif. — Korean supplier iRiver plans to expand its selection of audiophile-oriented MP3 players under the Astell&Kern brand to three models later this year from the current one, the company told TWICE.

Port Washington, N.Y. – The market for digital music ownership continues to grow despite increased usage of streaming radio and on-demand services, The NPD Group said.

NPD defined digital music ownership as consisting only of paid, permanent downloads.

The digital music market will grow by about 10 percent on a unit basis in 2012 even though online radio and on-demand services “remain the fastest growing form of music consumption in the U.S.,” NPD said.

San Francisco – Apple increased the screen sizes of its seventh-generation iPod Nano and fifth-generation iPod Touch and added new features.

The new model are thinned out, with and now include Siri on the iPod Touch and video playback on the Nano.

Both models will be available in October, with the 16GB Nano retailing for $149. Only one Nano will be available instead of two.

LAS VEGAS — MP3 players and portable media players (PMPs) are coming in traditional and untraditional form here at International CES.

The untraditional form takes the shape of PMPs with 5-inch and 7-inch screens from Coby, a Naxa product promoted as both an e-reader and multimedia player with 7-inch screen, and 5- and 7-inch versions of Sungale’s Kula TV Internet TV/PMP.

MILPITAS, CALIF. – SanDisk upgraded its audio-only Sansa Clip MP3 player lineup with the Sansa Clip Zip, which adds playback of DRM-free AAC files downloaded from the iTunes Store.

The music-only Clip Zip also adds a 1.1-inch color screen to display album art and a graphical user interface, whereas its predecessor featured four-line text-only OLED display. Other new features include a stopwatch for exercising and MicroUSB port in a thinner form factor than its predecessor.

LAS VEGAS — MP3 and MP3/video players had a great growth run until A/V-playing cellphones became ubiquitous, but because dedicated portable media players still account for billions of dollars in sales, suppliers here at International CES continue to launch new models.

For the January through September 2011 period, MP3 and MP3/video players accounted for $3.8 billion of factory- level sales, down 6 percent from the year-ago period, Consumer Electronics Association statistics show. Unit sales of 22 million were down by 9 percent.

LAS VEGAS — Sony company is joining Archos, Samsung and Philips in adopting Android as the OS for portable media players that are able to download apps and games, much like an iPod Touch.

Like the Samsung and Philips models, the Sony Z-series Walkman Mobile Entertainment Player downloads app from the Android Market. The Archos models access the AppsLib market.

Pioneer's second-generation wearable satellite radio, the Sirius XM XMp3, is the first satellite-radio receiver with the ability to record several channels at once for later playback, Sirius XM said.

The $279-suggested XMp3 headphone stereo will replace Pioneer's first-generation model, the $399-suggested Inno, which was marketed by XM before the merger of the two satellite providers.
