Record CES '12 Attendance, Says Indy Audit

Arlington, Va. - The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), owner and producer of International CES, welcomed a record 156,153 industry professionals at the 2012 International CES, according to an independent audit.

There were also 3,319 exhibitors from around the globe that unveiled new technology products at CES, a 22 percent increase over last year's show.

In addition, a record-number of international professionals -- 35,734 -- attended the show from more than 150 countries, representing an increase of 13 percent over last year.

Mountain View, Calif. - Google closed its acquisition of Motorola Mobility, named a Google executive to replace Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha, and hired other new members to Motorola's executive team.

The new CEO, Dennis Woodside, promised "to focus Motorola Mobility's remarkable talent on fewer, bigger bets, and create wonderful devices that are used by people around the world."

Woodside oversaw integration planning for the acquisition and was former president of Google's Americas region.

Apple, HP Dominate Q1 Mobile Computing Shipments

Santa Clara, Calif. - Hewlett-Packard and Apple retained their respective leads in the laptop and tablet categories for the first quarter, according to DisplaySearch's latest report.

HP boosted its first-quarter shipments by about 700,000 units to 8.9 million, giving the company 16.2 percent of the market. However, this is down slightly from the previous first-quarter 17 percent as inroads were made by Acer, Lenovo and Asus. Dell also lost share as it continues its shift to the commercial computer market.

Virgin's PayLo Sub-Brand Adds Unlimited Talk, Messaging

Warren, N.J. - Virgin Mobile's no-contract PayLo cellular service launched its first plan with unlimited data and messaging.

The $40/month plan, designed for use with PayLo's feature phones, delivers unlimited voice minutes and messages, including text and picture messaging, email and IM. The plan also throws in 50MB of web access.

It joins two other payLo plans. A $30 plan offers 1500 minutes, 1500 messages and 30MB of web access. A $20 plan offers 400 minutes, 15-cent messages and web access of $1.50/MB.
