On The Scene: Newegg.com’s East Coast Distribution Center

EDISON, N.J. –

At 385,000 square feet,

Newegg.com

’s East Coast distribution center (DC), here, is the
largest and newest of the e-tailer’s three warehouse
and shipping facilities (the others are in Memphis,
Tenn., and at headquarters in City of Industry, Calif.).

Indeed, the Edison site handles 40 percent of all volume
for the online-only merchant, which ranked 12th on
TWICE’s Top 100 CE Retailers listing, with $2.3 billion
in sales in 2009.

According to VP Bernard Luthi, who variously heads
the company’s merchandising, marketing, web operations
and customer service functions, the New Jersey
DC fulfills 15,000 orders a day on average during the
non-holiday season, filling 30 to 40 trucks with some
20,000 SKUs.

Like each of Newegg’s distribution facilities, the New
Jersey DC is a model of logistical efficiency, and 99.8
percent of orders received by 2:30 p.m. are picked,
packed and out the door the same day, Luthi said,
resulting in two-day delivery for 90 percent of orders.
Consequently, the company guaranteed Christmas delivery
on purchases made as late as Dec. 23.

TWICE visited the Edison site just as the holiday
season was kicking into high gear. Here’s some of
what we saw.
