Samsung, AT&T, Tracfone Gain Cellular Share: ComScore

RESTON, VA. - Samsung increased its share of U.S. consumers using its phones during the three months ending April, while carriers AT&T and Tracfone slightly increased their share, ComScore consumer surveys show.

The survey also found that more phone-using consumers were sending text messages, browsing the web, downloading applications and accessing social-networking sites during the period compared with the previous three-month period.

In the average month during the three months ending April, 22.1 percent of mobile-phone users ages 13 and older used a Samsung phone, up 1 percentage point from the prior three-month period, ComScore said in highlighting the top five market- share leaders. LG lost a meager 0.1 percentage point share to come in with 21.8 percent; Motorola lost 1.3 percentage points to 21.6 percent; RIM gained 0.6 percentage points to 8.4 percent; and Nokia dropped a point to 8.1 percent.

For the three-month period, 234 million Americans age 13 and older were mobile subscribers, the company said.

Among U.S. carriers, Verizon Wireless maintained its top share in the three-month period ending April, posting a 31.1 percent share, down a meager 0.1 percentage point, while No. 2 AT&T gained 0.2 percentage points to 25.2 percent. Sprint and TMobile remained ties for third place, with each losing 0.1 percent point to come in with a 12 percent share. Prepaid MVNO Tracfone came in next with a 5.1 percent share, up 0.3 percentage points.

In terms of usage, app downloading and social-networking access posted the largest percentage gains during the three months. A total of 29.8 percent of subscribers downloaded an app during the average month in the three-month period, up 3.1 percent points from the previous three months, while the percentage of subscribers accessing a social- network site or blog during the period grew 2.8 percentage points to 19.9 percent. The percentage using their phone to browse the web during the period grew 2.5 percentage points.
