J&R Becomes 16th PRO Group Member

NEW YORK —

J&R Music & Computer
World has joined the Progressive Retailers
Organization (PRO Group).

The iconic New York City consumer electronics
dealer, founded 40 years ago by Joe
and Rachelle Friedman, became the 16th
member of the specialty A/V buying group
last month.

“I am extremely excited to welcome
Rachelle and Joe Friedman and their team to
PRO,” said Dave Workman, the group’s executive
director/COO. “J&R Music & Computer
World is a respected and important retailer in
the New York market and is very well established
with many of our core vendor partners.
We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial
relationship with everyone at J&R.”

Added co-CEO Rachelle Friedman, “Everyone
at J&R is extremely excited about joining
this prestigious buying group. By adding
J&R’s buying power to the PRO Group family,
new and stronger industry partnerships
will be realized.”

The downtown Manhattan dealer, whose
business spans a city block and encompasses
A/V, computers, digital imaging, prerecorded
media and small appliances, made
its formal PRO debut at the group’s annual
pre-CES shindig at Bally’s on Jan. 9.

The addition of J&R follows the loss of
former New York metro area member Sixth
Avenue Electronics, which closed shop earlier
this season. PRO is also represented in
that market by New Jersey-based Electronics
Expo.

In other J&R news, the retailer has launched
its first trade-in and upgrade service for preowned
CE. The turnkey program, managed
by NextWorth, will allow customers to trade
in old devices online or in store for credit toward
new purchases.

In-store shoppers will receive a J&R gift
card for the value of their used cell phones,
iPhones, iPods, iPads, digital cameras, tablets,
e-readers, Nintendo DS units and video
games, while online shoppers can trade in
a broader selection of products, which extends
to laptops, game consoles and GPS
devices.

Customers can receive up to $350 for an
iPad 2, upwards of $180 for an iPhone 4,
and as much as $115 for an iPod Touch.

“We are very pleased to be partnering
with NextWorth in this important service that
benefits everyone, from the consumer, to the
vendors, to our environment,” Friedman said.
