Amazon.com will open a new 600,000-square-foot fulfillment center here this summer, its fifth in Pennsylvania.

The leading Internet superstore says the facility, set to open in July, will allow it to serve its customers in the Northeast more efficiently while creating more than 1,100 jobs over the next three years, according to Mike McKenna, the e-tailer's North American fulfillment VP.

The Hazleton facility represents a total project investment of more than $20 million.

The expansion comes as the e-tailer experiences explosive growth. Net sales increased 35 percent last year to $14.8 billion, and net income increased 150 percent to $476 million. CE sales alone rocketed 55 percent to $2.3 billion last year, according to the latest TWICE Top 100 CE Retailers Report.
