What do Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Spider-Man … and Steve Jobs have in common?
The latter, co-founder of Apple, is going to be the subject of his own comic book. You can preorder it, ironically, on Amazon.com.
The idea is the brainchild of Bluewater Productions and will be available in August, according to a press release we’ve just received. The 32-page issue will be available in comic shops, bookstores and various online venues, including Barnes & Noble and Borders, for the cover price of $3.99. (No word if it is available for iPad.)
In the press release, Bluewater describes Jobs as being “nearly as iconic as his company logo. He’s been called an innovator, risk-taker, a visionary and a genius. He’s also been called unscrupulous, an egomaniac and a corporate pirate. Both sides of this complex personality are examined.” (Given the care with which it usually protects commentary on Jobs, I’ll be fascinated at the Apple P.R. department reaction to that description of their co-founder.)
“Admire him or hate him, Jobs’ vision and business acumen revolutionized the world,” the Bluewater release quotes CW Cooke, writer of the new comic book. “Between he and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, you would be hard pressed to find someone with greater influence over how we communicate, interact and do business over the last 30 years.”
(You know, you can’t really argue with that.)
And in the same release by Bluewater, president Darren Davis volunteered: “His innovations command front page news, speculation of his health affects the stock market. Not bad for a college dropout.”
Alas, Jobs is not the first technology exec to get the comic book treatment from Bluewater. The publisher noted, “The impetus to publish the Jobs biography was based on the demand and success of Bluewater’s biography comic featuring Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook. A graphic novel of the sold out Zuckerberg comic book will be in stores in September and retail for $10.99.” You can also pre-order the Zuckerberg comic book on Amazon.com.
But Jobs and Zuckerberg are not alone in getting their due in comic books since the company has given the same treatment to Lady Gaga, Angelina Jolie, Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck.
This reminds me of how some baby boomers were exposed to “Moby Dick,” “The Red Badge Of Courage” or “A Tale of Two Cities” and other classics in grammar school or high school via “Classics Illustrated Comic Books.”
Teachers back then usually had stock questions in quizzes to determine who actually read the book — or who read the “Classics Illustrated” versions … not that I would know anything about that.
