Sony, Samsung, HTC, Acer, Facebook & Google Form Global Virtual Reality Association

A team of VR-headset manufacturers have banded together to form the Global Virtual Reality Association.

The non-profit organization will “promote the growth of the global virtual reality (VR) industry … develop and share best practices for [the] industry and foster dialogue between public and private stakeholders around the world,” according to a statement. Founding members include Acer Starbreeze, Google, HTC Vive, Facebook’s Oculus, Samsung and Sony Interactive Entertainment

The group’s stated goal is to promote responsible development and adoption of VR globally, as well as to serve as a resource for consumers, policymakers, and industries interested in VR. According to a FAQ on its website, it will also host and participate in international discussions “to shape the public discussion on the technology.”

Said Tae-Yong Kim, VP, mobile communications business at Samsung Electronics: “The rapid growth of the virtual-reality industry presents many challenges as well as opportunities. It is important that we set a clear precedent for best practices and create a solid foundation from which we can build meaningful progress. Samsung is pleased to join the GVRA and to work with other industry leaders to promote responsible development and adoption of VR globally.”

Although no events are listed at this time, its website indicates they will be held in the future.

Those seeking to join the group should email [email protected].
