Sony PlayStation VR Headset Arrives Oct. 13

Sony’s entry into virtual reality takes place October 13 when the company’s $399 PlayStation VR headset hits the North America market along with VR-optimized titles.

Planned titles will be priced from $9.99 to $59.99.

On the eve of E3, the company also touted a $499 bundle consisting of the headset, a VR title called PlayStation VR Worlds, a $59 PlayStation camera needed to use the headset, and a pair of PlayStation Move handheld controllers needed for use with some VR titles.

Sony Interactive Entertainment America also announced plans to offer two Move controllers as a bundle for $99.99.

VR-optimized titles planned for PlayStation VR include “Farpoint,” “Star Wars Battlefront: X-Wing VR Mission,” and “Batman: Arkham VR.” The Star Wars title will be exclusive to PS VR for Christmas and will be free to current owners of the “Star Wars Battlefront” game for PlayStation4.

Sony previously said more than 50 VR titles will launch by the end of the year.

The headset and companion processor, which connects to a PlayStation4, also lets users view standard PS4 games and videos on a virtual screen up to an equivalent of 225 inches at a distance of 2.5 meters. Users will also be able to watch 360-degree photos and videos captured by omnidirectional cameras.

The headset features 5.7-inch OLED display, resolution of 1920 by 1080, 100-degree field of view, six-axis motion sensing, and HDMI.

The headset “brings with it the opportunity for virtual reality to reach the mainstream, as all 40 million PS4s in gamers’ homes are PS VR-capable [when a PlayStation camera is added],” the company said.
