Vudu Rolling Out Spark Dongle

Santa Clara, Calif. — Wal-Mart’s streaming-movie service Vudu has started a soft launch of a TV dongle called Spark that can link non-smart TVs to a Wi-Fi network to access movies and TV shows from the service.

The quiet rollout of the device, which was first revealed last fall through a Federal Communications Commission approval submission, was disclosed in a recent report by GigaOm. Walmart said the device is currently available at 2,400 stores for $25, with more stores adding the device soon.

Unlike other streaming dongles, such as Google’s Chromecast, Amazon’s FireTV Stick and the Roku Streaming Stick, Vudu’s Spark will not access other services, just the one dedicated Vudu service.

But the device costs $10 less than the Chromecast, and Vudu is offering up to $25 in Vudu credits for activating the stick.
