Quixel Research: Q3 Microdisplay Sales Are Surging

Sales of microdisplay-based rear-projection televisions recorded “unprecedented growth levels” in both unit and dollar volume during the third quarter (Q3) of 2004, according a new report from Quixel Research.

“Both unit volume and dollar value for Q3 alone have come in with 80 percent increases above total 2003 figures,” said Tamaryn Pratt, Quixel’s principal, commenting on the findings in her company’s newly released “MicroDisplay Rear Projection Market Review.”

Another major growth area for Q3 came in the front projector market, where the new “Front Projector Market Review” reports sales grew 73 percent in dollar value over Q3 2003. Year-to-date unit sales for front projectors are already close to doubling the total unit sales for 2003.

The company reports that one of the bigger sectors of the front projector market was the $1,500 segment, also known as the home entertainment market, which captured an 80 percent market share.

Maintaining a growth curve, Quixel showed that microdisplay rear-projection TV dollar volume sales more than doubled in Q3 vs. Q2, helping the MDRP TV category take “a strongly dominant share position in the total advanced display market, capturing over 50 percent of volume, and almost 50 percent of value,” according to Quixel.
