Toshiba Rolls Out UHD TVs, Offers HDMI Update

Irvine, Calif. — Toshiba said Thursday that its first three Ultra High-Definition TVs are now available at select retailers across the country and will soon receive a firmware update to support the new HDMI 2.0 standard.

The TVs in the 58-inch ($3,999 suggested retail), 65-inch ($5,499) and 84-inch ($16,999) screen sizes are part of the company’s L9300U series, and as a limited-time launch promotion, the company said it will bundle with each set purchase its BDX6400 Ultra HD up-scaling Symbio Blu-ray player and SBX5065 300-watt sound strip for on additional cost.

“We are proud that Toshiba’s 4K Ultra HD TVs are now available at quality retailers across the country,” said Scott Ramirez, Toshiba America Information Systems digital products division product marketing and development VP. “We are providing the highest quality product and the highest value by offering a free 4K up-converting Blu-ray player and a dynamic soundbar to create an unmatched home-theater experience.”

The L9300U-series TVs include Toshiba’s proprietary second-generation Cevo 4K Quad+Dual Core Engine to up-scale SD and HD images to fit extra pixel lines (3,840 by 2,160 total) on the Ultra HD screen.

Other features include Resolution Restoration, Color Restoration and Surface Brilliance Enhancement, as well as a gun-metal trim design and matching frame stand.

The sets also add ClearScan 240Hz refresh-rate technology for smooth-motion images, Expert Mode and ColorMaster Calibration Capability, and an advanced Cloud TV platform for access to streaming services as well as mobile devices. This includes a wide collection of media apps with ongoing upgrade capability, an open web browser with included wireless keyboard, MediaShare to access content from other DLNA-enabled devices,   MediaGuide TV programming guide with advanced search, Skype video calling, streaming news, and  built-in Wi-Fi and WiDi for both router and peer-to-peer wireless capabilities

Toshiba said the sets ship with HDMI 1.4 inputs (which supports up to 4K/30p frame rate), but the company will provide a free firmware upgrade to HDMI 2.0 level capability in December to support 4K/60 fps content.

“Toshiba is leading the industry in 4K Ultra HD technology,” said Ramirez. “While many brands are just getting started in Ultra HD, our Cevo 4K engine is second-generation technology. Now we are adding HDMI 2.0 level capability so users can enjoy our amazing picture quality with higher-speed 60 fps 4K content.”
