MPEG LA Charges Sceptre With Patent Infringements

Denver – Digital technology patent administrator MPEG LA said Thursday it has filed patent license enforcement actions against flat-panel TV resource Sceptre.

According to the complaints, Sceptre is allegedly offering in the United States products including digital TV sets that use patent-protected MPEG-2 and ATSC digital broadcast standard systems and methods without licenses from the individual patent holders or portfolio licenses from MPEG LA.

MPEG LA said it filed patent enforcement actions against Sceptre in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Executives with Sceptre did not respond to requests for comment at the time of posting.

Denver-based MPEG LA licenses patent pools covering essential patents required for use of the MPEG-2, MPEG-4 Visual (Part 2), IEEE 1394, VC-1, ATSC, MVC, MPEG-2 Systems and AVC/H.264 standards.

MPEG LA also offers a license for Wireless Mesh technology and is working on pooled licensing for the new High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard.
