Bath, England — LG Electronics’ U.K. sales division said Thursday that its long-anticipated 55-inch OLED HDTV is available for pre-orders at 9,999 pounds ($13,100) now, with deliveries slated for July.
LG said in January the 1080p 55-inch OLED model will go on sale in the United States later this month at a $12,000 suggested retail, but no official promotional retail launch plans have been announced. The set is already on sale in South Korea.
The company has also shown a 65-inch version, but thus far no delivery dates or pricing have been announced.
The set, which was a star product of both the 2012 and 2013 International CES, is being shown exclusively at Harrods in the U.K.
The set features a 4mm ultra-slim screen, deep contrast ratio, low power consumption and strong color reproduction. LG’s approach to the technology uses a White RGB (WRGB) system and implements LG’s Cinema 3D with edge-to-edge Cinema Screen Design. Cinema 3D uses passive 3D glasses technology allowing for use of low cost 3D glasses.
The WRGB system uses a set of four sub-pixels, three of which are used to create colors with color filters. One extra sub-pixel is used to produce white light without a filter. The set of four combine to form a single image pixel on the screen.
The television also features the company’s Smart TV technology.
