LG Plans HDR Firmware Updates For 2 OLED TVs

Englewood Cliffs, N.J. — High dynamic range (HDR) will come to select LG 4K OLED TVs as a firmware update once HDR technical specifications are finalized, LG announced.

Updates will be available for the 65-inch $8,999-UPP 65EG9600 and 55-inch 55EG9600 at $5,499, both with curved 4K Ultra High Definition screens. They are the company’s OLED flagships for 2015.

“Once technical specifications for HDR are finalized, LG plans to provide a firmware upgrade for the LG EG9600 series which will support HDR content,” a spokesman said. ”This network update will enable consumers to enjoy HDR content streamed through LG’s Smart TV partner apps or delivered via other devices through the TV’s IP interface.” The company could not confirm whether the updates would enable HDR support through the TVs’ HDMI ports.

Availability of HDR upgrades for other 4K OLED models wasn’t announced. For 2015, the company plans 11 OLED models, including one carryover FullHD OLED. “While we cannot confirm specific future models, we can confirm that OLED is perfectly suited to display HDR content. We’ll have additional updates once technical specifications for HDR are finalized,” a spokesman said.

Though the UHD Alliance is expected to deliver its HDR spec later this year, LG said it is working with “a variety of industry groups on HDR specs.”

The UHD Alliance is a group of film studios, TV makers, content distributors, and post-production and technology companies that are creating performance minimums for 4K home-video content such as resolution, HDR, wide color gamut, high frame rates and immersive object-based audio.

TVs incorporating the alliance’s 4K and HDR specs hit the market later this year,

Members include Netflix, DirecTV, Dolby, DTS, LG, M Star Semiconductor, NVIDIA, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Technicolor, The Walt Disney Studios, Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Bros. Entertainment and Universal Pictures.

During a recent event, LG Electronics USA product development director Tim Alessi said OLED technology delivers perfect black, which “sets the foundation for color and brightness.” Perfect black, he said, “delivers any requirement of HDR.”
