Hisense To Double Mexico Production To 3 Million TVs Per Year

Hisense is investing $30 million to update and expand the Mexico factory that it purchased from Sharp as part of an effort to double production by year’s end to 3 million TVs per year, Hisense announced.

The 1.3-million-square-foot facility, based in Rosarito, currently produces about 120,000 units per month, or 1.44 million per year, though annual capacity is currently 2.4 million. The facility, called HIMEX, is already Hisense’s largest TV-production base outside China, the company said.

“In addition to enhancing our logistics and fulfillment capabilities through its strategic location,” said Hisense North America CEO Jerry Liu, “this world-class facility will be producing a total of 47 television models that will be available to consumers across North and South America this year.”

The facility will produce TVs from both brands, including Hisense’s Full HD and 4K sets, Hisense’s flagship ULED series, and Sharp’s portfolio.

In 2016, Hisense and Sharp products will be available in more than 10,000 retail locations across North America, up from 3,000 in 2015, the company added. Hisense took possession of the facility on Jan. 6 and started production on Jan. 12. The company spent $23.7 million to acquire the facility’s equity and assets. HIMEX is set on more than 49 acres and includes a warehouse, providing a supply-chain platform.

At the 2016 International CES, Hisense outlined plans to become the number-three TV brand in the U.S. in the next three years.

The facility employs 500 people, down from 800, and operates a free on-site healthcare clinic, childcare facility, and recreational sports facility.
