3Doodler Now Has A $40 3D Pen

WobbleWorks, an early pioneer of 3D printing for consumers, unveiled a new 3Doodler 3D pen for kids just a few days before the commencement of Toy Fair.

The 3Doodler Start, currently available for preorder at $39.99, is geared toward ages 8-13. The 5.4-inch-long pen has been redesigned to eliminate hot points as well as employ just one speed and temperature. Plastic is extruded, and then stopped, with just one button press. Battery life is said to be up to one hour of continuous use; it charges via MicroUSB port and can be used while plugged in.

The $40 price tag includes the pen, two packs of plastic (48 strands in eight colors), a charging cable and a project book. Additional six-packs of the biodegradable, BPA-free plastic strands can be purchased for $19.99. Shipping is expected to begin in May.

Co-founder Daniel Cowen likened the pen to Legos, saying it will “become part of every kid’s upbringing.”

The company has released a video for the 3Doodler Start:
