Amsterdam , The Netherlands — TomTomNV and Tele Atlas NV received clearance from the European Commission for TomTom to purchase Tele Atlas.

Clearance from U.S. authorities was received in October 2007.

Tele Atlas is one of only two leading map makers for GPS devices worldwide, and its rival, Navteq, agreed to be acquired by Nokia for $8.1 billion last October, a deal that is also awaiting approval by the European Commission.

TomTom said its purchase of Tele Atlas will result in more interactive and enriched maps for GPS devices.
