Tandy reported yesterday its chairman and former CEO John Roach will retire on May 20, one year earlier than planned, and will be succeeded by company president and CEO Len Roberts.
Roberts replaced Roach as president and CEO in January when Roach announced that he would retire as chairman in May 2000, according to published reports. Roberts joined Tandy in 1993 as president of RadioShack where he added the Sprint and Compaq store-within-a-store facilities and reorganized how the chain delivers services to its customers.
Roach will continue serving Tandy as chairman emeritus and stay on as chairman of Justin Industries and Texas Christian University's board of trustees. During his tenure at Tandy Roach oversaw RadioShack's growth to more than 7,000 locations, the creation and dissolution of the 19-store Incredible Universe chain and the selling of Tandy's Computer City chain to CompUSA last year.
