E Fun Builds Theft-Deterrents Into Its Nextbook Ares Tablets

E Fun has begun building in theft-deterrent solutions for retailers into its Android tablets.

The company’s Nextbook Ares 8- and 10.1-inch tablets will ship embedded with Point-of-Sale Activation (PoSA) technology from Digital Safety USA. This tech digitally locks Nextbook devices during the manufacturing process through a software upgrade in the firmware, rendering the tablet inoperable until unlocked via a legitimate consumer. A consumer can unlock it using a unique code printed on the sales receipt; the device will permanently lock if the wrong code is entered too many times.

Nextbook packaging will also feature the PoSA logo as a warning to would-be thieves.

This built-in tech will help retailers sell more tablets, said E Fun, while protecting from theft and return fraud. One plus of the solution is that it eliminates the need for purchasing wraps, tags, and boxes for security purposes, lessening the packaging and in turn reducing the barriers between consumers and the products.

They will start shipping May 13.
