Amazon Sees Appstore Gains

Seattle — Amazon reported that its Appstore selection almost tripled over the past year to more than 240,000 apps and games in almost 200 countries for the company’s Kindle Fire tablets.

The app selection still has a long way to go to catch up with Apple’s selection of more than 500,000 native iPad apps in its app store as of early this year. For iPads, iPhones and iPod Touches, Apple’s App Store offers 1 million apps in about 155 countries for its smartphones and iPads.

Amazon also said the number of new developers joining the Amazon Appstore per month almost doubled in the past year.

Mike George, Amazon’s Appstore and games VP, also noted that “most Android apps just work on Kindle Fire,” and Amazon’s Appstore “can help developers distribute their apps on Android devices all over the world.”

Amazon offers three Fire models, each available with multiple memory capacities. Two models are also available in LTE versions. Prices start at $139 for an 8GB Fire HD with special offers to$579 for the Fire HDX 8.9 with 64GB capacity and 4G LTE without special offers.
