Farmington, Conn. – A new global HDTV market forecast on integrated circuit chips in HDTVs from Global Information (GII) is calling for a slight recovery in HDTV sales in the second half of 2012 with more substantial growth emerging in 2013.
As reasons for this optimism, the GII “Databeans” study points to LED-lit LCD screens getting a bump from newer lower-cost direct-LED backlight models that appeal to more price-conscious consumers and the emergence of ultra-premium OLED and smart TVs appealing to more well-heeled customers looking to upgrade.
At the same time, the firm projects total global semiconductor revenue for televisions to grow from just more than $12.7 billion in 2012, to more than $14.2 billion in 2013.
“Over the next five years the market should grow at a healthy tick of 11 percent annually on average,” the firm said.
