Oct. Sales Slip 4% For Tech, Appliance Retailers

Retail sales at the nation’s electronics and appliance stores fell 4 percent year over year in October, to $8.6 billion, the U.S. Commerce Department reported.

However, sales were static from September, slipping just 0.4 percent.

By comparison, October sell-through was up 5.2 percent year over year at furniture and home-furnishings stores, and rose 7.1 percent for e-tailers and other direct sellers.

The dip, which was reflected in lower CE and majap comps at Costco and Conn’s, was not unexpected. According to Shawn DuBravac, chief economist for the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), who tracks tech purchase intentions, a decline in October is consistent with past years and “not unusual,” as shoppers gird themselves for the holiday sales ahead.
