July Majap Shipments Up 7.1%: AHAM

Washington — The appliance industry’s hot streak continued in July, with factory shipments of white goods rising 7.1 percent year over year.

According to the latest monthly tabulations from the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), some 4.9 million units were shipped last month, with the biggest increases seen in laundry, up 17 percent to 1.1 million units, and dishwashers, ahead 13 percent to 508,000 units shipped.

Vendors achieved the July gains without the usual benefit of room air. The relatively cool summer has resulted in a 49 percent decline in AC factory shipments, while refrigeration, another beneficiary of the summer season, trailed its fellow core categories with an increase of 7 percent.

Total sales also cooled off from June, when dealer orders spiked in advance of the July 4 promotional period, and total shipments rose 11.3 percent.

Shipments of the core AHAM 6, a composite of the laundry, cooking, dishwasher and refrigerator categories, rose 4.6 percent July, and total majap volume is up 4.3 percent year-to-date over 2013.

The industry is currently projecting full-year gains of about 4 percent.
