Global Tablet Sales Decline In Q1, Says NPD DisplaySearch

Santa Clara, Calif. – Global year-over-year shipments of tablets fell for the first time in the first quarter, dropping almost 5 percent to 56.3 million units from the year-ago 59 million units, NPD DisplaySearch found.

Shrinking tablet PC shipments have played a major role in recent declines in the overall mobile PC market shipments, the company added.

Tablet PCs accounted for more than half of all mobile PC shipments in the first quarter, and as a result, year-over-year shipment growth for mobile PCs fell 5 percent to 99 million from the year-ago 104.4 million units, NPD DisplaySearch said.

Within the mobile PC segment, notebook PC shipments fell 14 percent to 35 million units from the year-ago 40.7 million units, but ultra-slim mobile PC shipments rose 62 percent to 7.8 million from the year-ago 4.8 million.

DisplaySearch also found that:

–Apple maintained the No. 1 position in the mobile PC market share, with 20 percent market share, or almost twice that of No. 2-ranked Samsung with 11 percent.

–More than 80 percent of Apple’s mobile PC shipments were tablets, and more than 90 percent of Samsung’s mobile PC shipments were tablets.

–Lenovo increased up its tablet shipments to almost 30 percent of its mobile PC sales in the first quarter, compared with only 3 percent in the year-ago quarter.
