Connected TV Use To Reach 204M By 2017

Port Washington, N.Y. — More than 204 million connected TV devices will deliver apps to U.S. homes linked to the internet by 2017, according to a new study from The NPD Group.

According to the latest “NPD Connected Intelligence Connected Home Forecast,” ownership of connected TV devices is expected to grow 100 percent by 2017. These devices include video game consoles, streaming-media players, Blu-ray Disc players and TVs.

NPD cited two key forces driving market adoption, streaming-media players and TVs, which are expected to represent the majority of the growth in installed and Internet-connected units over the next three years.

The analyst said the rate of adoption is expected to increase from 60 percent in 2014 to 76 percent of installed units by 2017.

The increased connectivity will be bolstered by: hardware upgrades that prompt consumers to connect, increased app programming from TV networks, and improvements to user interfaces.
