Amazon Enters Retail Top 10

Washington — Amazon.com has become the ninth-largest U.S. retailer in total domestic sales, the National Retail Federation (NRF) reported.

The trade association’s annual retailer ranking, released this month, shows Amazon cracking the Top 10 for the first time by leapfrogging 10th-place Safeway and nestling in behind No. 8 Lowe’s.

Amazon’s rise on the rankings was fueled by a 27.2 percent increase in total U.S. sales last year, the NRF report shows.

Walmart, with $334.3 billion in domestic sales, remained the top dog despite a moderate 1.7 percent sales gain. It was followed by second-ranked Kroger and No. 3 Costco — whose 5.2 percent sales gain bumped Target to fourth place following a 0.9 percent sales decline last year.

The fifth, sixth and seventh spots were held by The Home Depot, Walgreen and CVS, respectively.

Amazon placed third on TWICE’s Top 100 CE Retailers Report, ahead of Apple and behind Best Buy and Walmart.

In a combined CE and entertainment breakout by the NRF showing online sales only, Amazon came in first, followed by Best Buy, Apple/iTunes, AT&T, Verizon, Toys“R”Us, GameStop, Barnes & Noble and QVC.

TWICE will publish its first e-tail-only Top 20 report in the Aug. 4 issue.

The NRF’s rankings were compiled by consultancy Kantar Retail and published in the trade group’s Stores Magazine. The complete report is available here.
