40% Of Homes To Get Streaming Players

Port Washington, N.Y. – A new study predicts 40 percent of U.S. Internet-connected homes will have a streaming-media player by the end of the 2016.

The NPD Group Connected Intelligence Connected Home forecast said the total number of homes with a streaming-media player will rise to 39 million by the first quarter of 2017.

In the first quarter of 2014, only 16 percent of U.S. Internet-connected homes had such a device.

Ownership is on track to climb to nearly one-quarter of homes, 24 percent, by Q1 2015, which is when consumers report device ownership that takes into account their holiday purchases, NPD said.

NPD said that over the past year, the market has advanced from dominance by Apple and Roku devices to a field of popular products also including Amazon and Google devices, both of which have made significant impacts.

In addition to streaming-media players, TVs, video game consoles and Blu-ray Disc players also deliver apps to viewers’ TVs.

Among these four device platforms, streaming-media players are forecast to contribute the most growth, and TVs the second most growth, for installed and Internet-connected TV devices over the next two years.

This will drive the total number devices delivering apps to TVs up to 211 million by Q1 2017.

Regarding service use, the report said Amazon’s Prime Instant Video service saw the greatest percentage point increase, and all of the top five video services benefited from the growing streaming-media device market.
