THX Sues Apple Over Speaker Patent

San Jose, Calif. – THX Ltd. sued Apple in federal court here, alleging that Apple is using patented THX speaker technology in select iOS mobile devices and in iMac PCs, Bloomberg reports.

The patent involves a narrow-profile speaker configuration that boosts output and is alleged to appear in the iPad, iMac, iPhone 4 and other select Apple products.

The suit said the infringement caused “monetary damage and irreparable harm.”

The patent mentions a driver whose output fires through a narrow slot and features a wide horizontal dispersion angle and narrow vertical dispersion angle. A narrow vertical dispersion pattern is used in THX-certified home theater speakers.

San Rafael, Calif.-based THX is the developer of performance standards and technologies designed to improve the sound quality of home, car and cinema audio systems as well as the video performance of Blu-ray players and HDTVs. The suit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in San Jose.
