New Mobile Devices, Streamer On Way From Google?

New Nexus-branded smartphones, a new Nexus-branded tablet and a new Nexus streaming-media player could be in store from Google on Sept. 29, when it has scheduled an announcement in San Francisco.

Last year on Oct. 15, the company unveiled the industry’s first phone and tablet with Android 5.0 Lollipop OS. They were the Motorola-made Nexus 6 smartphone with 6-inch display and the HTC-made Nexus 9 with 8.9-inch display.

The company at the time also launched the first device running Android TV — the Asus-made Nexus Player streaming-media player, which streams audio and video from streaming services, downloads games, and features Google Cast. The latter lets users stream content from Cast-enabled mobile-device apps through the player without using up the mobile device’s battery.

Reports indicate that Google for the first time will launch two Nexus smartphones, one made by LG and the other by Huawei. Marking the first time it will make a Nexus phone for Google.

The current Nexus 6 smartphone with 6-inch display is made by Motorola, and its processor, the Nexus 5, is still available and made by LG.

The new phones will likely run Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which was announced in May.

Google’s Nexus phones and tablets normally run the latest Android OS and are positioned as running the pure version of the OS to show consumers and phone manufacturers the OS’s full potential.

Nexus phones are sold by Google through the Google Play store as well as through major carriers. The versions sold by Google are sold unlocked for use on the AT&T and T-Mobile networks. The tablets are sold by Google, retailers, and if equipped with cellular, through carriers.
