LG To Expand Flagship UI Features To Tablets, More Smartphones

Seoul, South Korea — LG Electronics will extend proprietary user-interface (UI) features introduced in G3 flagship smartphone across most of the company’s mid- to entry-level smartphones and tablets launched in the second half of this year, the company said.

“Standardizing these features across our entry- and midtier mobile products is just a natural extension of our desire to make every LG device feel premium and unique,” said Jong-seok Park, president/CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. The UI is designed to make “complex technologies simple and convenient,” he said.

The G3 was unveiled in May.

Key UI features that will be extended to more phones include a simplified camera and a smart keyboard. One key camera feature is called Touch and Shoot, which lets users tap anywhere on the display to focus and trigger the shutter in a single step. Gesture Shot makes selfies simpler to take by letting users open and close a hand in front of the lens to start a three-second countdown before triggering the shutter. Clean View offers a full, clutter-free preview interface that removes camera menu icons from the screen, the company said.

Smart Keyboard reduces input errors by up to 75 percent by tracking and analyzing typing habits and intuitively knowing the words that the user intends to type. The keyboard can also be re-sized to better fit the user’s hands and thumbs. Suggested words appear above the keyboard and can be entered with the upward flick of a thumb. Individual keys can be customized with frequently used symbols, and long presses of the space bar and sliding the thumb or finger left and right repositions the cursor for faster editing.
