Comcast Muscling In On Mobile: Report

Comcast appears to be gearing up for a foray into mobile.

According to sources familiar with the communications conglomerate, Greg Butz, sales and marketing operations executive VP, has been picked to honcho a new mobile unit, while other top tech and operations managers are also being shuffled, TWICE sister publication Multichannel News reported.

Word of the mobile initiative comes some eight months after Comcast notified Verizon Wireless of its intention to invoke its MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) rights under a previous spectrum sale, and follows Comcast Cable CEO Neil Smit’s pronouncement that the cable operator is in the “test and learn” mode regarding wireless offerings.

The company is also angling for a piece of the connected-home market, having opened up its monitored-security/home-automation system to operate with devices from a wide variety of home-automation brands.
