Brother Bows Laser Printers For Consumers

LAS VEGAS -Brother this week at CES is introducing its newest consumer-level laser printer line.

Consisting of the HL-1650 and HL-1670N, the line is targeted to small businesses and home power-PC users, said senior printer product manager Jeff Sandler. The models will carry respective suggested retail prices of $599 and $749 and are expected to start shipping at the end of January.

The HL-1650 features 16-page per minute printing at 1,200 dpi and comes with 8MB of memory, upgradable to 136MB. The HL1670N has a built-in network card and 16MB of memory. The printers include a newly developed control pad that contains a three-color LCD and basic printing controls.

With these models, Brother is continuing the effort it started with the HL-1200 series to grab part of the entry-level market from category leader Hewlett-Packard, Sandler said. He would not say what Brother’s specific share goal is but did say the company expects to make inroads.

“We are trying to attract customers by packing more [features] into a less expensive package,” Sandler said.

The products will sell primarily through the office superstore channel and various e-commerce sites.
