Yezz Smartphone Doubles As VR Action Camera

Smartphones decimated sales of MP3 players, point-and-shoot cameras, and home phones, and now they might be poised to take a major chunk out of the action-camera market.

Unlocked-smartphone maker Yezz plans a CES introduction of a smartphone with 360-degree 4K camera capability. The LTE-equipped 5.5-inch Sfera creates a 360-degree image or video by stitching together the images and videos captured by special lenses on the front and rear cameras. Users will be able to horizontally and vertically browse the captured image or video, zooming and freezing the images without blind spots or distortion, the company said.

Through the Cardboard Viewer option, users will be able to use a Google Cardboard viewer to view their 360 degree images and videos with a virtual reality experience.

The phone is compatible with action-camera accessories.

The first generation will offer Android 6.0 Marshmallow, MediaTek Helio 2.2GHz octacore processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB embedded storage, FullHD display with Gorilla Glass screen, and 5-megapixel front and rear cameras.  It offers 4K H.264/H.265 video decoding at 30fps and 4K H.265 video encoding at 30fps.

Pricing was unavailable.

Yezz will exhibit at the Las Vegas Convention Center, South Hall 3, booth 31154.
