T-Mobile Undercuts Rivals On Family Pricing

Bellevue, Wash. — T-Mobile cut the price of a wireless plan for a family of four for a limited time to further undercut its main rivals.

Starting July 30, a family of four will be able to get a T-Mobile Simple Choice Plan with 10GB of LTE data, or 2.5GB each, until 2016 for $100/month, or $60 less than similar plans from the other three national carriers. The plan includes unlimited talk, text, free unlimited international data in more than 120 countries and destinations, tethering, and unlimited Cloud-based music streaming that doesn’t count against a user’s data bucket. After the plans’ LTE data cap is reached, speeds slow to 2G speeds with no data-overage charges.

The plan previously included only 1GB of data per family member.

Families must sign up by Sept. 30, and the service price lasts through Jan. 2, 2016.

In contrast, the AT&T Mobile Share Value plan and Verizon More Everything plan for a family of four offer unlimited talk and text, 10GB of shared data with overage charges, and tethering, but they count music streaming against their data buckets. They also don’t include international text and data in their plans. The closest Sprint plan for a family of four offers unlimited talk and text, only 4GB of data with overage charges (1GB per family member), no included tethering, and streaming music counted against the data bucket.

In a blog post, T-Mobile CEO John Legere focused on AT&T in promoting his plan. “So, here’s the math. AT&T’s ‘best-ever pricing’ four lines for $160 vs. four lines for $100 with T-Mobile — with unlimited talk, text and data plus up to 10 GB of LTE data on our data-strong network. Plus, their ‘best-ever’ deal comes with a boatload of crap — domestic overages, international roaming fees, hidden device subsidy costs, and on and on. “
