T-Mobile Expands Music Freedom Streaming

T-Mobile added 11 new music-streaming services to its Music Freedom program – including SomaFM, Spinrilla, and TuneIn Premium.

That brings to 44 the number of services that Simple Choice-plan subscribers can stream without incurring LTE data charges. Music Freedom was launched last year with only seven services.

The services available under Music Freedom account for more than 95 percent of streamed music, T-Mobile said.  More than 196 million songs are streamed by T-Mobile customers every day under the program, the company added. Music Freedom is free and open to any music streaming provider that wants to participate, the carrier noted.

T-Mobile contends Music Freedom is one reason it is expanding its subscriber base. An Oct. 2014 survey commissioned by the company found that one in four wireless users said Music Freedom “is a key reason they’ve switched or would switch to the Un-carrier,” T-Mobile said.

John Legere, T-Mobile president/CEO, said almost 40 percent of phone users avoid streaming music on their phones “because the carriers tax and toll every note you stream.”

The new services available under Music Freedom are:

  • Aud.io, offering high-fidelity Internet radio;
  • Dash Radio, a DJ-driven service with no commercials;
  • DatPiff, offering mixtapes, hip hop, and underground music;
  • Jango Internet radio;
  • KCRW, offering music discovery, NPR news, and public affairs;
  • Noon Pacific, a weekly mixtape of songs picked from  music blogs;
  • Radio Danz, a pure dance channel;
  • SomaFM, offering ambient, downtempo and chill music from well-known and unknown artists;
  • Spinrilla, offering hip-hop mixtape downloads and streams with no downloading limits;
  • StreamOn;
  • and TuneIn Premium, whch delivers 100,000 radio stations and 5.7 million podcasts.

Services previously available include Pandora, Rhapsody, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Google Music, Apple Music, Samsung Milk Music, Songza, Rdio, AccuRadio, SiriusXM, and Tidal Music.
