Sprint Fires Another Shot In Price War

Overland Park, Kan. – Sprint and T-Mobile, once potential merger partners, are breaking up badly.

Sprint is cutting prices on its unlimited data, talk and text plan to $60/month from $80 to undercut T-Mobile’s unlimited plan by $20. AT&T and Verizon currently don’t offer unlimited-data plans.

Sprint’s new plan is available Aug. 22 to existing and new subscribers who purchase an unsubsidized phone at full price up front or through the Sprint Easy Pay installment-payment plan. The new plan is also available to consumers who bring their own compatible phone to the Sprint network.

The monthly price applies to data over Sprint’s network only.

Sprint said its new everyday price of $60 saves customers $480 over two years compared to T-Mobile’s $80 everyday price. Consumers would save $120 over two years compared to T-Mobile’s promotional price on unlimited talk, text and data.

“Unlimited talk, text and data for $60 is the best unlimited postpaid plan available,” said Marcelo Claure, Sprint’s new CEO. “And, we’ve listened to our loyal customers; we’re making the Sprint $60 Unlimited Plan available to both new and existing customers.”

The announcement follows Sprint’s announcement earlier this week of the Sprint Family Share Pack plan, promoted as offering double the high-speed data at the same or lower price than its three national rivals.

And the announcement follows by mere hours an initiative announced by T-Mobile to offer free unlimited LTE data for a year to T-Mobile Simple Choice subscribers who convince a Sprint, AT&T, or Verizon subscriber to switch. The person who switches also gets unlimited LTE data for a year.
