Sprint Eliminates 600kbps Limit On Video Streaming

Overland Park, Kan. – Sprint swiftly reversed course and eliminated a 600kbps speed cap on video streaming in the All-In unlimited plan launched yesterday.

The carrier also said it dropped the cap on two unlimited plans available exclusively through Best Buy: the Best Buy One Family Plan, launched earlier this week, and the Best Buy One plan, launched in March.

“Some consumers raised concerns about a 600kbps limitation, and we are acting immediately to address these concerns,” Sprint said in a statement referring to the All-In plan.

Added Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure: “We heard you loud and clear, and we are removing the 600kbps limitation on streaming video.”

Sprint isn’t giving up throttling completely, however. “During certain times, like other wireless carriers, we might have to manage the network in order to reduce congestion and provide a better customer experience for the majority of our customers,” Claure said.

Sprint also confirmed that it hasn’t eliminated a limit in which it said it might terminate service if, under the All-In plan, off-network roaming usage in a month exceeds 800 minutes or a majority of minutes or 100MB or a majority of kilobytes used. The roaming limits in the Best Buy plans also remain, Sprint said.

Sprint’s All-In plan bundles the lease of select phones with unlimited talk, text and LTE data at $80 to simplify the purchase decision, Sprint said. Consumers should “not be fooled by advertising gimmicks that only list the price of a phone or the price of a service plan, making it difficult to understand the full story,” the company said when it announced the plan.
