LG Readies LTE Mid-Tier Smartphones

Seoul, South Korea — LG will go to next week’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) with a quartet of “mass-tier” smartphones that will be available in 3G HSPA+21Mbps and LTE Category 4 versions beginning this week in select global markets.

Features range from 4- to 5-inch displays, 1.2GHz dual-core to 1.3GHz quad-core processors, and 5- to 8- megapixel main cameras. The LTE versions will feature Category 4 LTE, offering maximum 150Mbps downlinks and 51Mbps uplinks, whereas some versions of LTE offer faster speeds. Category 9 LTE, for example, offers maximum speeds up to 450Mbps/51Mbps.

All of the midrange phones feature Android Lollipop 5.0 OS and in-cell touch display, which reduces phone thickness, maximizes display areas, minimizes bezel sizes, and brings images closer to the screen. The latter offer improved sensitivity with faster touch recognition, better outdoor visibility and crisper images, the company said.

All also come with user interface features of the company’s premium models, and some come with premium phones’ back-panel on/off and volume buttons. User-interface features include gesture shot, enabling users to take selfies by making a hand gesture that starts a three-second countdown. The hand gestures can now be recognized up to nearly 5 feet from the phone to accommodate selfie sticks, the company said. Glance View, appearing first on the G Flex2, lets users quickly access information such as time, recent messages or missed calls by swiping downward on the screen even when the screen is off.

The top two models, the LG Magna and LG Spirit, add a gently curved design for a more comfortable fit in a person’s hands, the company said. The displays are also slightly curved with a “subtle” 3,000mm radius curve, the company added.

The LTE versions of each phone feature metallic back covers, while the HSPA+ versions feature patterned plastic back covers.

The Magna features 5-inch HD display with 294 PPI, 1.2GHz or 1.3GHz quad-core processor depending on the country, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, 8- or 5-megapixel main camera, 5-megapixel front camera,  2,540 mAh battery and 10.2mm depth.

The LG Spirit features a 4.7-inch HD display with 312 PPI, 1.2GHz or 1.3GHs quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, 8- or 5-megapixel main camera, 1-megapixerl front camera, 2,100 mAh battery and 9.9mm depth.

The Leon features a 4.5-inch FWVGA display with 220 PPI, 1.2GHz or 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 8- or 5-megapixel main camera, VGA front camera, 1,900 mAh battery and 10.9mm depth.

The Joy features a 4-inch WVGA display with 233 PPI, 1.2GHz dual-core or 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB or 512MB RAM, 8GB or 4GB storage, 5-megapixel main camera, VGA front camera, 1,900 mAh battery and 11.9mm depth.
