LG, Mobile Carriers Spicing Up V20 Pre-Sale

LG Electronics and its carrier partners are throwing in a number of added incentives on pre-orders of LG Electronics’ new flagship V20 smartphone to supplement an already heady spec sheet.

At least three carriers — AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint — are or will be offering a minimum $200 credit toward the purchase of the V20 with the trade-in of any working 4G smartphone, and are including a free pair of H3 B&O Play in-ear headphones, valued at $149, that can show off the V20’s 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC capabilities.

AT&T, which began taking pre-orders Oct. 7, is also dangling a free LG G Pad X 10.1 in front of would-be V20 buyers (with a two-year agreement), and up to $695 in monthly credits on a new line of DirecTV and Uverse TV service.

Excluding discounts, total payments work out to $830 for AT&T’s V20, and $770 for T-Mobile’s version, which went on pre-sale today:

T-Mo customers receive the added benefit of the phone’s Band 66-capable radio, which will allow them to take advantage of the magenta carrier’s new and exclusively-deployed LTE AWS-3 spectrum.

Sprint will begin its pre-sale Oct. 21 but hasn’t announced pricing, and Verizon confirmed that it will carry the V20 but has provided no further details.

The phones, which come pre-loaded with Android 7.0 Nougat, are expected to ship later this month.

The V20 itself blends the best of its direct antecedent, the LG V10, and its modular cousin, the LG G5, into a sleek, lightweight, 5.7-inch handset that’s packed with enough “fun” features, the company hopes, to make for a compelling alternative to Android’s reigning Samsung Galaxy flagships.

The smartphone franchise suffered a major setback this season with the recall and subsequent discontinuation of the Note7 phablet, creating an unexpected window of opportunity for LG and other handset makers.
