LG To Bring Pen-Enabled G3 Variant To IFA

Berlin — LG will go to the IFA convention here next week to demonstrate a pen-enabled variant of its G3 flagship smartphone.

The LG G3 Stylus smartphone features a large 5.5-inch display and many of the user-interface features of the G3, but it features only 3G technology to deliver what LG called a “fairly priced package.”

The Android 4.2.2 phone is positioned as “the perfect tool for consumers who don’t want to be bogged down carrying a laptop, tablet and smartphone,” said Jong-seok Park, president/CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications.

The new phone’s proprietary Rubberdium stylus can be used to jot down notes and sketches.

LG will roll out the G3 Stylus in 3G markets starting in Brazil in September followed by countries in Asia, Middle East and Africa and CIS. Plans for U.S. sales weren’t announced.

The G3 Stylus features a 5.5-inch display but with quarter-HD resolution instead of the G3’s quad-HD display. It offers the same floating arc tapered edges, thin bezels and metallic chassis of the G3 but doesn’t come with the G3’s LTE.

Also like the G3, the G3 Stylus features an Android 4.2.2, 13-megapixel main camera and 3,000 mAh battery, but the new phone comes with a quad-core 1.3GHz CPU instead of a quad-core 2.5GHz CPU, 1GB RAM instead of 3GB, and 1.3-megapixel front camera instead of 2.1 megapixels.

Other features include 8GB storage and a MicroSD card slot.

The company didn’t say whether the Stylus offers the G3’s improved optical image stabilizer, laser autofocus, or ability to record and play back 192kHz/24-bit WAV and FLAC files.

Carried-over user interface features include dual window to divide the screen into two separate windows to display and use two apps simultaneously. The Smart Keyboard can be swiped to increase keyboard size, and consumers can long-press the space bar and slide their finger on the spacebar to position the cursor. The keyboard also lets users swipe up with their left or right thumb to select the word that the keyboard suggests. The keyboard features are said to speed up typing while reducing errors by more than 75 percent.

Also like the G3, the new phone features Knock Code to unlock the device with a personalized “knock” pattern on the screen.

Other carried-over features include QuickMemo+ for quick content capture and sharing. Touch and shoot lets users touch anywhere on the display to focus and shoot in one step. Gesture shot lets users take selfies by opening and closing their hand in front of the lens to start a three-second countdown.
