AT&T Expands Phone-Number Sharing To LG Pad X

AT&T is expanding its selection of NumberSync-compatible devices via a software update for LG’s cellular-equipped LG G Pad X 10.1 tablet.

The tablet is the first Android tablet with NumberSync service, which lets users share their primary smartphone number with devices such as cellular-equipped tablets and cellular-equipped smart watches.

AT&T subscribers make and receive IP-based voice and video calls from the LG tablet using their smartphone number. The tablet’s calls are made over AT&T’s cellular-data network or over Wi-Fi. Users also send and receive texts from the tablet using their smartphone number.

For the service to work with the tablet, the subscriber’s primary smartphone must feature VoLTE (Voice over LTE), which sends voice calls over the data network in IP packets, a spokesperson said.

NumberSync devices do not depend on a Bluetooth connection to a subscriber’s primary smartphone. The device’s NumberSync service works even if the primary phone is off.

Other NumberSync-compatible products are the Samsung Gear S2 smart watch, which is the first connected smartwatch to support both voice and messaging with NumberSync, AT&T said. NumberSync also works with most iPads running iOS 9.2 or later, the Apple Watch running watchOS 2 or later, most iPod touch devices running iOS 9.2 or later, and most Mac computers running OS X El Capitan. AT&T also plans to launch the Samsung Gear S2 classic smart watch with NumberSync.

NumberSync-compatible smartphones include the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, or newer model running iOS 9.2 or later.

The LG tablet is priced by AT&T at $249 with contract, $349 without.
