LG Readies LTE-Equipped Smart Watch

Seoul, South Korea — LG will go to next week’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) with what it said will be the industry’s first LTE-equipped smart watch, which will send and receive voice calls and messages without a companion smartphone.

The LG Watch Urbane LTE, which features a metal case and circular Plastic-OLED display, runs on the company’s LG Wearable Platform operating system, developed specifically for the company’s wearable products.

As previously announced, the company is also bringing the all-metal Android Wear-based LG Watch Urbane to the show.

The LTE model features NFC for use as a mobile wallet, a built-in heart-rate monitor, motion sensors to track fitness goals, and specialized features for golfers, cyclists and hikers. IP67 dust and waterproof certification enables the watch can be submerged in 3.3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes. A 700 mAH battery, said to be the largest in the smart-watch category, delivers “days” of standby time and impressively long talk and use times,” the company claimed.

The 1.3-inch P-OLED (320 by 320 / 245 PPI always-on touchscreen displays a choice of several thousand watch faces, which can be customized with photographs. The display can be switched to display apps.

Three physical buttons on the right side access select functions without swiping through multiple menu screens, the company said. One button accesses the quick setting menu that lets users adjust battery usage, brightness, volume and connection settings. Another button switches between the watch face display and installed apps. The third button is a back button that, when depressed quickly, automatically dials any preset phone number and sends the location of the wearer.

The watch also supports push-to-talk (PTT) capability if supported by a carrier.

Other key features include 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB RAM, 4GB storage, nine-axis sensor, barometer, GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/ n and Bluetooth 4.0 LE.

A release date wasn’t announced.
