Fashion Designer Takes On HP Smart Watch

Palo Alto, Calif. — HP may be looking to add a higher sense of fashion to its wearables product portfolio after teaming up with noted menswear designer Michael Bastian to produce a smart watch.

Scant details on the forthcoming device were telegraphed by fashion website Gilt.com, which will exclusively retail the “timepiece featuring smart technology” starting this fall, according to reports. Pricing was not disclosed.

The iOS- and Android-compatible watch will reportedly feature HP technology but is not expected to carry the PC giant’s brand.

When/if it arrives, HP will be taking an interesting marketing route into the wearables category, apparently placing fashion above technology in its messaging and marketing strategy, while offering an evolving new product category under private label through a fashion-centric e-commerce platform.

Meanwhile, Bastian is noted for using the dashboards of luxury cars as the inspiration for some of his designs.

The watch’s 44mm case will be made of stainless steel and offered in a choice of three straps. A special limited-edition black model is also planned.

The watch will display notifications, control music remotely, and provide the latest weather, financial and sports updates.
