Sharp Shows 3-Way LCD Display

Sharp showed here on the eve of CEATEC a Triple Directional Viewing LCD that controls the viewing angle of an LCD screen to present three different images simultaneously when being viewed from left, right and center angles. The technology is similar to the dual-angle LCD panel that is now being used in some car video players to present two different images on one screen.

The Triple Directional Viewing LCD uses a proprietary parallax barrier on a standard TFT LCD, the screen splits light in three directions—left, right and center—and displays three separate images on the same screen at the same time.

Applications could include providing a navigation system for a driver, a movie for a passenger seated in a back seat of a vehicle and Web browsing for a passenger seated in the right front seat. The technology could also be applied to multipurpose public signs.
