Sanyo Electric has introduced a new CD drive technology that is capable of burning 1.4GB of data to a CD, almost twice what is now available.

The CRD-BPDV2 Hi Burn drive is able to double the density by placing the data pits closer together than during a normal recording process. However, this process requires that the completed disc be played back on a DVD drive which has had its firmware upgraded to access the Hi Burn media.
