Ridgefield Park, N.J. - Samsung Electronics America has formally released statistics showing it has surpassed the 60 percent market share threshold to establish a commanding lead in the U.S. 3DTV market.

Samsung's claim comes from newly released revenue and unit sell-through data from market research company The NPD Group. The statement provides further details from Samsung on its 3DTV market share over and above what John Revie, visual display marketing senior VP, told TWICE last week.

The release comes after a new ad campaign and study from LG Electronics that broke last week that claims consumers prefer passive glasses over active-shutter 3DTV glasses that Samsung and others use.

Specifically, for the time period May 22-June 18, Samsung has a unit and dollar share of 61 percent in the 3DTV market, which includes both LED and plasma 3DTVs. In addition, according to NPD's Retail Tracking Service, Samsung has more than 50 percent unit and dollar market share for April to May.

Consumers purchasing qualified 2011 3DTVs from participating authorized retailers will receive two pairs of 3D active glasses (model SSG-3100GB) free of cost, directly from participating authorized retailers at their discretion, the manufacturer said.

Samsung also reminded that it has lowered prices on its complete line of glasses as of May 1 - battery-operated 3D active glasses are now $49.99.
