Amazon Extends Same-Day Delivery

Seattle – Amazon.com has expanded its same-day delivery capabilities to six more markets, for a total of ten major metro areas.

More than a million items are eligible for the seven-day-a-week service, including CE, games, movies, office supplies, sporting goods, apparel, home accessories, household items and health and beauty products.

Orders must be placed before noon, and the fee for “Get It Today” deliveries is $9.98 for the first item and 99 cents for each additional item, although Amazon Prime customers pay a single fee of $5.99 for an unlimited basket of same-day purchases.

Same-day delivery has become the Holy Grail of e-tailing, and Amazon has forsaken its sales tax advantage in numerous states by building distribution centers in pursuit of that goal.

“Imagine how much time you will save now that you can get sunscreen, memory cards, toothpaste, hit movies, text books and HDMI cables all delivered to your home in hours, seven days a week, in one order from Amazon,” said Amazon Prime  VP Greg Greeley.

The program began in Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix, and is now available as well in Baltimore, Dallas, Indianapolis, New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C.
