Walmart Hikes Holiday Hires

Bentonville, Ark. – Walmart plans to hire 10 percent more temporary workers for the holiday season, suggesting expectations for a more robust fourth quarter.

Gisel Ruiz, chief operating officer of Walmart U.S., said the retailer is looking to hire 60,000 seasonal associates, in addition to offering extra hours to current employees.

“We will have more registers than ever open during peak shopping hours between Black Friday and Christmas,” she said in a statement.

Seasonal hires are seen as an important gauge of retailers’ holiday outlooks.

In contrast, Toys“R”Us said it will hire 45,000 seasonal employees at its stores and distribution centers, on par with last year’s levels a spokesperson told TWICE, while hhgregg announced plans to hire more than 450 full- and part-time CE and majap sales associates by mid-October, down from 500 last year, with the promise of permanent placement if certain performance standards are met.
