Wal-Mart HQ Cuts Continue

Wal-Mart Stores has laid off between 1 and 3 percent of its information services staff following a tech division reorganization.

The information services unit, based at company headquarters in Bentonville, Ark., develops technology for the discounter’s brick-and-mortar stores. It merged on Jan. 15 with @WalmartLabs, the chain’s San Bruno, Calif.-based online technology arm.

Both divisions now operate under the Walmart Technology group, the local Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.

The layoffs follow a headcount reduction last October that trimmed 450 headquarters jobs; a 120-person downsizing at Sam’s Club corporate in January; and the closure of 269 stores, including 154 in the U.S., that was also announced last month.

The consolidations come as the company instituted a collective $2.7 billion pay raise last week that brought the average hourly wage for full-time workers up to $13.38.
